PDP #24 - "The Woman in White" by Wilkie Collins, Part 1

Part 1 of the novel, "The Woman in White" a serialized mystery/suspense novel by Wilkie Collins, a contemporary of Charles Dickens, who also wrote "The Fatal Cradle" heard as an earlier short story podcast.

The novel is one of the first to be set up in an original way for the time period, in that it has different narrators to tell different parts of the story. In the introduction it is explained that we shall hear the tale as if we were a Judge listening to eye witnesses.

This has been touted as the first mystery novel by some and was turned into a musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber which had sporadic runs with different Companies in 2004, 2005 and 2006. I; however, shall not be singing in the podcast so if you can stomach that disappointment, come along for a fun ride into mystery and suspense.

Well I can hardly believe it, I've made it to the 20th podcast of The Public Domain Podcast! We've been through 20 weeks, 9 authors, 1 poem, 1 novel, 18 short stories, and one slight microphone upgrade.

This week I'm late in releasing the show, my apologies for any who might have been waiting on it. I have only the holiday busy season to account for it, having gone out of town for Thanksgiving for a week and come back to much work to catch up on for my online stores. I shall still be releasing next week's podcast on Monday so you will get a one two punch of podcasts in quick succession.

This week's tale was suggested by listener, John. It's a thought provoking piece on what makes a coward set in the context of a man about to fight a duel. I quite liked it. EDIT: Caution, this is not regular Christmas fare and may be depressing to some.

Delayed Show

My apologies for the delayed show this week. A friend passed away last week and yesterday was his services. His life was cut short by complications from leukemia even after a bone marrow transplant months before had looked promising enough that he had even returned to work. His rapid decline in health was a bit of a shock, and also in some ways I don't think you are ever prepared for the news of a death of a friend.

He was a fantastic artist and a wonderful man and was supportive of my art as he was of every artist with whom he came into contact. So, I will be releasing a show this week as I know he would've wanted me to keep creating.

Plus, he would have appreciated a good tale of creepy adventure.

Need Opinions

I mentioned at the end of PDP #13 that I used a new microphone; however, I believe I need to work on my microphone technique to get more out of it (I think I stayed too far away from it). So while I hope you still hear an improvement, I think that me having to use a compression filter on the audio files introduced a few problems of its own. Remember I'm a new podcaster so please bear with me as I tweak each show as I learn more and more about how to create them.

I'm also considering creating MP3s at a slightly higher bit rate, which would make the file size bigger. For instance PDP #13 was only 8.5 Mb in size even though it was one of my longer podcasts at about 35 minutes. If I go with a higher rate the file size could jump up to 16 Mb or even 33 Mb.

Is file size a huge consideration for you?

Mr. Strock is diverted from The Great Eyrie case to a new one, his housekeeper notices something strange, and communication is received from the mysterious inventor. In a historical context, these chapters are interesting in light of Verne's commentary on the police force and the desire of countries for military superiority.

PDP #9 - The Master of the World by Jules Verne, Part 3

Here we go, Chapters 5 and 6 of The Master of the World (manual download link here).

Time is approximately 24 minutes and the file size is only about 5 Mb.

So far in our story we've had a strange occurence in the mountains, a swift and mysterious road vehicle and the puzzled police. It gets even stranger in these chapters.

On the admin side I think you'll be pleased with the improved quality of the recordings. I have noticed, however; a strange and faint rhythmic background sound, not a hum but more of a tap. It only occurs in a few places. It may be related to my use of a very cheap microphone. I'm going to test this theory and if it proves true I will set aside a new microphone fund. If you'd like to contribute, purchase at OffLine T-shirts or use my Amazon link for something there.

PDP #8 - Bonus - "A Story of Divination" by Lafcadio Hearn

This is a special bonus podcast. I got to thinking that even at the rate of reading 2 chapters per podcast, it would take a number of weeks for me to finish reading a novel. Previously with my selections if you didn't like the story I was reading one week, you had only to wait another to hear something else. With a novel you might be waiting for a month. So I've decided to sprinkle in a bonus Thursday podcast every other week in which I'm involved with a novel. The bonus podcasts however will always be short to give my voice a break ;)

This week I chose to read an excerpt from Lafcadio Hearn's, "In Ghostly Japan" in part due to listener Alexander's request for more Hearn in his comment he left in the blog last week. This story is told by Hearn about an acquaintance of his who in turn told him a story about divination. It mentions the Meiji, a time in Japan where they turned sharply to adopt the trappings of Western Civilization. This story had several Japanese terms which I was not familiar with. I have to thank my friend Jean for help in pronunciations though I'm sure I still butchered a few words. Jean has a store which carries japanese items like her Got Sake? t-shirt if you are in a shopping mood.

On a final note, I was able to record this story in a quieter setting so those who noticed a bit of a humming in past recordings will be happy to note this one is quieter. However, I did not remember to bump up the bit rate so it is still at last week's level. I'll bump it up for next week.

PDP #6 - "The Master of the World" by Jules Verne, Part 1

Here we go, the first novel attempted at The Public Domain Podcast! EDIT: Here is the corrected file to manually download. I've chosen this science fiction adventure by Jules Verne for the purpose. Its protagonist, John Strock, "head inspector in the federal police department at Washington" is charged with getting to the bottom of some very unusual occurences happening in the twentieth century US.

I had not read this before and found myself drawn in by the first few chapters to find out more about this "Master of the World".

This podcast contains Chapters 1: "What Happened in the Mountains" and 2: "I Reach Morganton" and is approximately 26 minutes long.

The entire novel is comprised of 18 chapters. Some are shorter than others but I will most likely be doing 2-3 chapters per podcast.

Administrative Feedback Needed

After some research on spoken word recording, I decided to record this podcast at a lower setting, 32 kbps, so the mp3 file size is quite small, less than 10 Mb. Let me know if you notice a difference in the recording quality or have other issues with the file and would like me to go back to my other settings.

Bonus Podcast?

I'm thinking of offering another podcast during the weeks in which I'm reading part of a novel so folks who aren't interested in that particular novel won't have to wait 4 weeks to hear something else. I was thinking of choosing very short stories for the bonus podcasts, nothing too long since I'll have my hands full with the novel. Would that be a good idea? Or would it mess folks up who have scheduled to check my feed only once a week?

I thought perhaps this bonus podcast could be offered on the Thursday of the week that I do novels but I'm open to suggestions.

PDP #5 - "After Twenty Years" by O. Henry

This short story has a distinct O. Henry turn to it. It clocks in as the shortest podcast to date at 6 minutes 45 seconds. I had another project in mind but I went out of town and came back with a sore throat so I've put that off until later.

PDP #4 - "The Fatal Cradle" by Wilkie Collins

This short story was written by a contemporary and friend of Charles Dickens. No need to fear, it's not a gory tale despite the title but is really quite humorous.

In order to not break up the drama I've slightly exceeded the 30 minute mark and this podcast is 42 minutes long. Please give it a listen though, if anything I think you'll find amusement in some of the accents I tried to reproduce.

Thinking of Switching to Mondays

I'm considering changing the release of the regular podcasts to Mondays instead of Sundays. As it is I am only getting them up by the evening my time (Pacific Standard) so I'd like to give myself a little leeway and have them live Monday instead.

PDP #3 - "A Dog's Tale" by Mark Twain

I began The Public Domain Podcast series with a tale of a cat and have decided to even the count with this tale of a dog. Told from the dog's point of view it gives you Twain's view on animal rights.

The podcast is approximately 20 minutes and 40 seconds and is about 19 Mb in size. A small snippet of music is used under the "outro". It is an excerpt from the song Goes Nowhere by Michelle Welsh from her album Sleep-Awake and was found from Staccato Music and used with permission following the Creative Commons agreement.

This week's tale is from a collection of translated Japanese ghost stories by Lafcadio Hearn. Lafcadio's work is a new find for me and I quite enjoyed reading the tale. The story itself is pretty short so I added in a little about me and the podcast. The whole podcast is 8 minutes long.

PDP #1 - "The Black Cat" by Edgar Allen Poe

Well, this is it! The first Public Domain Podcast! Edgar Allen Poe's "The Black Cat".

Download it here! Or use this link to subscribe with an aggregator like iPodder or iTunes. Length is 23 minutes and it's the complete story read by yours truly.

I have to be honest here, I chose The Black Cat because 1. its length wasn't too long 2. I hadn't read the story before so I was curious about it and 3. I'm a fan of Poe. You'll have to bear with me on some of my chosen phrasing for the story. I was essentially reading it on the fly and if I had been doing it professionally I would have added more subtlety into it. Still, it's my first podcast and I think it'll make for interesting listening.

Background outro music is an excerpt from the song Goes Nowhere by Michelle Welsh from her album Sleep-Awake and was found from Staccato Music.

Welcome to the Public Domain Podcast blog. This project is about sharing entertaining literary works that are in the public domain by providing a weekly podcast reading.

I plan on doing a "reading podcast" once a week and keeping the length to under 30 minutes; though, to keep short stories intact, I may push through to the end if it's close to the 30 minute mark. I will list the time of each podcast in its announcement post so you can plan on whether to take it on your commute or just listen to it while doing chores or at the kids bedtime. When I do novels I will read them sequentially. I may also include a short podcast supplement which will either be book/news related or a short reading in and of itself.
